Queen Elizabeth II Bids Farewell to Spanish Royals as State Visit Ends

LONDON – Queen Elizabeth II and her husband bid farewell to the King and Queen of Spain, whose three-day state visit came to an end on Friday.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia have been on a royal visit to the United Kingdom since Wednesday, where they were the UK’s 91-year-old monarch hosted them at Buckingham Palace, her official London residence.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip marked the end of the visit by the Spanish royals with a farewell ceremony at the Palace.

King Felipe and his wife would then visit Spanish experts at the Francis Crick Institute; Europe’s largest biomedical research center.

They were also set to travel to the University of Oxford to visit the Weston Library for an exhibition of Spanish treasures, including a first edition of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes and the Codex Mendoza, a manuscript documenting Aztec civilization following Spain’s 1521 conquest of Mexico.

The visit was the first to be made by a Spanish monarch in over 30 years, when King Juan Carlos graced the nation with his wife Queen Sofia in 1986.
