Uruguay’s Mujica Stable after Brief Hospitalization

MONTEVIDEO – Uruguayan former President Jose Mujica is resting at home in stable condition after spending 36 hours in the hospital, his physician told EFE on Tuesday.

“Mujica is fine, but he had some imbalances in his blood levels and that’s why he was admitted, to do more tests,” Dr. Raquel Pannone said.

The imbalances eased over the course of the 82-year-old former head of state’s hospital stay, she said.

Mujica, who governed Uruguay from 2010-2015, checked into the same hospital about 10 days ago for a stomach complaint.

Pannone said she prescribed a week’s rest for her famous patient.

“He has a lot of activity. The question of medical leave is because he has a lot of commitments,” the doctor said, noting that Mujica devotes time every day to working the land on his farm outside Montevideo.
