Thiem Sends Nadal Packing, Goes Through to Rome Masters Semifinals

ROME – Dominic Thiem put an end to Rafael Nadal’s winning streak at 17 victories by beating the Spaniard 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters.

The seven-time champion, who defeated Thiem in the finals in Barcelona and Madrid, suffered on Friday his second defeat against the Austrian player and bid farewell to the Rome Masters.

Nadal, widely regarded as the greatest clay court player in history, played his 12th quarterfinal match in the last 13 appearances in Rome, but succumbed to a great performance by Thiem, who will play on Saturday the semifinal match against the winner of the duel between Serbian Novak Djokovic and Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro.
