Muguruza Beats Goerges, to Play Williams in Italian Open Quarters

ROME – Spanish tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza, world No. 7, won on Thursday against German Julia Goerges and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Italian Open, in which she is set to face American Venus Williams.

Muguruza took one hour and 47 minutes to beat her German opponent 7-5, 6-4 in their second duel, following their Barcelona Open match in 2012, won by Goerges.

The Spaniard, 23, is now looking to get into the semifinals in Rome at the expense of Venus Williams, who defeated British Johanna Konta 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in one hour and 49 minutes.

Muguruza has faced Venus three times in her career and is still looking for her first win against the older Williams’ sister.
