Muguruza took one hour and 47 minutes to beat her German opponent 7-5, 6-4 in their second duel, following their Barcelona Open match in 2012, won by Goerges.
The Spaniard, 23, is now looking to get into the semifinals in Rome at the expense of Venus Williams, who defeated British Johanna Konta 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in one hour and 49 minutes.
