ROME – American tennis player Venus Williams beat on Thursday British Johanna Konta and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open, in which she may face Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza.
Venus, 36, beat Konta 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in one hour and 49 minutes, after the last three defeats Konta inflicted on her in Miami 2017, Stanford 2016 and Australian Open 2016.
Before this victory on Thursday, Venus prevailed over Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova in the first round and Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko in the second.
The oldest of the Williams sisters may face world No. 7 Muguruza in the quarterfinal, if the Spaniard defeats German Julia Goerges.
