ROME – Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world No. 4, qualified on Thursday to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open after defeating Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 in an hour and 37 minutes.
Halep, who won the Madrid Open title recently, is set to face Estonian Anett Kontaveit, who eliminated world No. 1 Angelique Kerber in the second round of the tournament in Rome.
The 25-year-old Romanian demonstrated her great potential in clay matches by winning 24 matches out of the last 28 games.
Halep was knocked out of last year’s Italian Open when Australian Daria Gavrilova defeated her 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the round of 32.
