ROME – Australian tennis player Daria Gavrilova, world No. 33, knocked out Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, world No. 8, to secure her place in the Italian Open quarterfinals.
Kuznetsova said goodbye to the tournament after losing 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, to Gavrilova, who had eliminated American Madison Keys, runner-up last year, and Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia.
The Russian won the three previous clashes with the Australian; in Moscow, St. Petersburg and last year in Rome.
In the next round Gavrilova is set to play the winner of the match between Russian Ekaterina Makarova and Dutch Kiki Bertens.
