ROME – German tennis player Angelique Kerber was stunned on her first day at the Italian Open when she was defeated by Estonian Anett Kontaveit on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old player, world No. 68, thrashed Kerber 6-4, 6-0 in just 57 minutes.
Before meeting Kerber, world No. 1, Kontaveit played two preliminary matches, including a match against the other German Andrea Petkovic.
Kontaveit will play the round of 16 against 35-year-old veteran Croatian Mirjana Lucic Baroni on Thursday.
