BAGHDAD – At least 18 people were killed and 35 others wounded on Monday when a car packed with explosives detonated at a busy market in Baghdad, an Iraqi security official told EFE.
The explosion took place in the capital’s al-A’amel neighborhood.
Victims include women and children and the death toll could rise, the official said.
The explosion also caused serious damage to a number of shops and vehicles and security forces cordoned off the area in anticipation of other attacks.
Iraqi government forces are currently carrying out a military offensive to drive the Islamic State terror organization from the northern city of Mosul.
