MADRID – Atletico Madrid defeated visiting Sevilla 3-1 on Sunday at Vicente Calderon Stadium in round 28 of La Liga action.
Uruguayan defender Diego Godin opened the scoring for Atletico 37 minutes into the first half with a header.
Nearly half an hour later, Antoine Griezmann scored again for the Rojiblancos at the 61-minute mark with a stunning free kick executed from just outside the box.
Koke scored Atletico’s third goal in minute 77 before Joaquin Correa hit back late for Sevilla, nailing his team’s only goal just five minutes before the final whistle.
Atletico Madrid is in fourth place in the standings with 55 points, just two points behind third-place Sevilla.
Sevilla’s defeat highlighted coach Jorge Sampaoli’s recent uninspiring leadership, with the team falling to newbie Leicester City in the knockout stage of the Champions League.
