BILBAO, Spain – Real Madrid snatched an important 2-1 away win on Saturday against Athletic Bilbao at San Mames Stadium, a victory that extends its La Liga lead over second-place FC Barcelona.
Karim Benzema opened the scoring for the Blancos at the 24-minute mark of the first half, but Aritz Aduriz leveled for Bilbao 20 minutes into the second half.
Real Madrid bounced back three minutes later to take the lead for good on a goal by Casemiro, who scored at point-blank range after Cristiano Ronaldo had headed on a corner kick by Toni Kroos.
The league leaders have now increased their La Liga haul to 65 points; Barcelona is five points back and can narrow that gap to two with a home victory Sunday against Valencia, but Real Madrid would still be in a commanding position with a game in hand.
Bilbao is still in seventh place in the Spanish league with 44 points after Saturday’s loss.
