Cristiano Ronaldo Nominated for 2017 Laureus Award

MADRID Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the nominees for the 2017 Laureus World Sports Awards for best athletes.

The organizing committee revealed that the Real Madrid star is one of the nominees after winning the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup with the Spanish team, in addition to claiming the Euro 2016 title with Portugal.

Jamaican Usain Bolt, Britons Mo Farah and Andy Murray and Stephen Curry and LeBron James from the United States, are the other nominees for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award, whose last edition was won by Serbian Novak Djokovic.

Both Real Madrid and Portugal are among the finalists for the Laureus World Team of the Year, along with Brazil, which won the gold medal in the Olympics last August in Rio, the Mercedes F1 team, the Chicago Cubs and NBA champions the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Spanish jumper Ruth Beitia is nominated to win the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award, along with US swimmer Michael Phelps, Argentine tennis player Juan Martin del Potro, British rider Nick Skelton, Mauritanian triathlete Fabienne St Louis and Norwegian skier Aksel Lund Svindal.

The United States dominates the nominations for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award with gymnast Simone Biles, swimmer Katie Ledecky and athlete Allyson Felix.

The list of the best sportswoman of the year also includes German tennis player Angelique Kerber, Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson and British cyclist Laura Kenny.
