BRUSSELS – Belgian soccer legend François Van der Elst died on Wednesday aged 62, his brother told Belgian media on Wednesday.
Van der Elst had been in a coma in hospital since the beginning of this year, when he was admitted with heart failure after celebrating the New Year with his family.
The soccer icon was a midfielder and made his professional debut in 1971 with Anderlecht, where he played 243 games in the Belgian league and scored 82 goals.
He scored 14 goals in 44 games with Belgium.
The funeral of the Belgian star will be held next Saturday in his hometown Opwijk, northwest of Brussels.
