Infantino Says New Format with 48 Teams Will Help Develop Soccer

ZURICH FIFA president Gianni Infantino categorically defended the decision taken on Tuesday by FIFA council to increase from 32 to 48 the teams that will participate in the 2026 World Cup and said that the expansion will help the development of soccer.

Infantino expressed these views at a press conference after presiding at the second meeting of the council in Zurich.

The president said that he was very satisfied with the decision taken since, in his opinion, it expands the number of teams but does not increase the days of competition, which remain at 32, with each team playing a maximum of 7 games.

He added that the World Cup competition needed change to adapt to the 21st century and the spirit of the decision is to bring soccer to more countries and more fans.
