Honduras Investigates Alleged Plot to Kill President, U.S. Ambassador

TEGUCIGALPA – The president of Honduras has announced that authorities are investigating an alleged plot orchestrated by the Atlantic Cartel to assassinate him and the United States ambassador in Tegucigalpa.

“Some time ago, we reported that there were indications of an attack against the ambassador (James) Nealon and your (leader) by the criminal Atlantic group,” Juan Orlando Hernandez said in a press release.

Hernandez added that security forces had been ordered to “do their job, investigate and make the proceedings of the case, not only because it concerns the ambassador of the United States, but because it is a citizen who is accredited in this country, or any other citizen.”

The investigation is already underway with security forces conducting interrogations, according to the Honduran president, who said he would not elaborate on the alleged plan out of the need for “care and prudence.”

The Atlantic Cartel is led by the Honduran Wilter Blanco Ruiz, who is wanted in the United States for drug trafficking.

Unidentified external sources had reportedly alerted Honduran authorities to the alleged plan by the drug cartel to assassinate the president and the U.S. ambassador.

“It is being worked on, it is being investigated and what needs to be done is being done to identify where (the threat) comes from and how it will be neutralized,” he said.

The U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa said last week that the country was investigating Ruiz and another six citizens, among them a military official, for narcotrafficking and corruption.

According to information from authorities, Ruiz ran speedboats “from Panama to the Atlantic zone of the Honduras” to transport drugs.
