Nurses in Portugal Call for National Strike in October

LISBON Nurses in Portugal are calling for a national strike on Oct. 13-14 to demand the hiring of more staff and the application of 35 hours-per-week working shifts for employees who are not yet included in this system.

Jose Carlos Martins, a leader of the Portuguese Nurses Association, announced on Monday that meetings with the authorities were not fruitful and has therefore decided to move ahead with a rally outside the Ministry of Health on Oct. 7 and a strike on Oct. 13-14.

After assuming power, the socialist government reversed some of the austerity measures implemented during the years of economic rescue and applied the 35 hours-per-week system for employees which entered into force on July 1.

However, around 9,000 nurses across the country continue to work 40 hours-per-week because their contracts have not yet been amended.
