MOSCOW - Five people were killed in an elevator collapse in a building in Moscow on Friday, Russian police said.
The cause of the incident _ which saw an elevator drop from the 19th floor of a building in the northeast of the Russian capital _ remained unknown.
Three of the victims died in the incident and the other two perished as they were taken to hospital, according to a police spokesperson cited by Russia's state news agency TASS.
According to preliminary information, the victims of the collapse had been workers carrying out construction on the building.
Since the start of the year, two elevator accidents have been recorded in Moscow, prompting the Russian prosecutor to launch a nationwide campaign to assess the safety of elevators in residential buildings.
