SHANGHAI – Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski told reporters on Friday he planned to meet with counterparts from Colombia, Chile, Mexico and possibly Brazil during his visit to New York for next week’s UN General Assembly meeting.
The meeting with those regional heads of state will be held on the sidelines of the Assembly’s General Debate, which will run from Sept. 20-26, the president said before boarding a plane for the Big Apple.
Kuczynski, who is well known on Wall Street and previously held senior positions at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, also will meet with billionaire businessman and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The president did not mention any possible meeting with U.S. counterpart Barack Obama, although he confirmed that the American head of state would attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, Forum Summit in Lima in November.
Kuczynski on Friday concluded a five-day official visit to China aimed at attracting investment from the Asian giant. During his stay, he met with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang, as well as business leaders from different sectors.
The new Peruvian president, who was sworn in on July 28, broke with tradition by choosing China over the United States for his first foreign visit as head of state.
