CALI, Colombia – A Colombian police officer died Friday during an attack launched by a sniper apparently belonging to the ELN guerrilla group in the southwestern province of Cauca, authorities said.
Edinson Yubanny Burbano Cordoba was slain when a police post was assaulted at the village of San Joaquin in the municipality of El Tambo.
“I’ve just been in touch with the police commander in Cauca and they’re in control of the area. Unfortunately the death of a police officer is a great cause of sorrow to all of us in the region,” provincial Gov. Oscar Rodrigo Campo said.
Preliminary reports indicate that “a sniper was the one who killed the policemen,” the governor said.
For the moment, he said, authorities are trying to discover the identity of the perpetrator “so we can give an official report about what happened in San Joaquin and who the attacker was.”
A battle broke out in the area and “we’re waiting for army reinforcements to arrive,” Campo said.
