MADRID – The second edition of the World Forum on Gastronomic Tourism, set for April 27-29 in Lima, will showcase the richness and diversity of Peruvian cuisine.
Representatives of Peru’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry, the UN World Tourism Organization, or UNWTO, and the Basque Culinary Center met in Madrid at Spain’s annual Fitur tourism fair to sign the accord designating Lima as the venue.
The forum fits with several UNWTO objectives by promoting the sharing of information and best practices in the realm of food tourism, BCC director Joxe Mari Aizega said.
“Gastronomy will consolidate itself in the coming years as one of the drivers of tourism as the global level,” he said.
UNWTO’s Yolanda Perdomo called gastronomy an area of “increasing importance” in developing high-value, “authentic” tourism experiences.
Peruvian gastronomy is “a banner tool to promote” the country, Deputy Tourism Minister Maria del Carmen de Reparaz.
The Andean nation’s cuisine has been enriched by the contributions of immigrants from Spain, Italy, Japan, the Arab world and China, leading to a fusion that has won plaudits around the world, the deputy minister said.
In recent years, Peru has been recognized by the World Travel Awards as the top international destination for food tourists, while Lima is seen as the capital of Latin America gastronomy.
Motivations for international tourism have changed, according to UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai, who said today’s travelers “want to experience the place, get to know the people,” something that is possible through gastronomy.
