SAN JUAN – The government of Dominica is preparing to host the island’s annual carnival, Mas Domnik, set to open Jan. 16 with a parade and continue with a series of events until Feb. 10, a government official confirmed to EFE on Thursday via phone.
More than 3,000 people are expected to join the parade, which will feature dance troupes and other performing groups.
Beauty and costume competitions will take place during the three-week festival.
Calypso-singer Slinger “Mighty Sparrow” Francisco will be honored at the Kaiso Hall of Fame & Classic Kaiso Concert on Jan. 29.
The government said in a statement Thursday there will be a significant increase in the number of police patrolling streets day and night to prevent crime.
