LA PAZ – A pregnant Bolivian woman about to give birth and her husband were unhurt after both of them fell onto the highway from a moving ambulance while on their way to a hospital in the eastern city of Santa Cruz, without the driver even realizing he had lost his passengers, local media reported Tuesday.
The couple, according to the Santa Cruz daily El Deber, had been picked up Sunday from a medical center in the village of Cotoca and were being taken to a hospital in Santa Cruz when, on their way through the Pampa Isla area, the ambulance doors opened unexpectedly and they fell onto the asphalt.
“The ambulance driver didn’t realize what had happened until other drivers caught up with him to let him know,” an eyewitness told the Santa Cruz daily.
The pregnant woman was taken in the same ambulance to a hospital, where she was finally able to give birth without any further terrifying incidents.
Both she and her baby are doing well.
Santa Cruz City Hall, according to the same newspaper, has suspended the ambulance driver from his job.
