BRASILIA Ė Some 5,000 military personnel are taking part in a wide-ranging security operation on Brazilís northwestern border, the Defense Ministry said Friday.

Operation Agata 10 is targeting environmental crimes, illegal trafficking of timber, drug smuggling and illegal fishing along the 10,000 kilometers (6,215 miles) of Brazilís border with Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname and Guyana, the ministry said in a statement.

The operation also involves military medics, who will provide cares for residents in Amazonia, along with tax inspectors and officials from regulatory agencies.

Ground troops are supported by transport and patrol vessels, speedboats and aircraft, the ministry said.
