Moldova Coach Resigns Ahead of Crucial Tie against Russia

MOSCOW Moldova coach Alexandru Curteian resigned on Monday from his post less than three weeks ahead of the crucial match against Russia, which they need to win to qualify for UEFA Euro 2016 in France.

Curteian, whose contract extends until the end of the qualifiers stage, presented his unconditional resignation after meeting with the president of the football federation of Moldova Pavel Chebanu, according to Russian media.

Moldova will be temporarily coached by Stefan Stoica, who will lead the team in the last two qualifying matches of the Euro group stage.

Moldova, which is at the bottom of Group G with just two points, will face Russia in Chisinau on Oct. 9.
