BERLIN – The German Animal Protection Federation demanded on Monday the removal of all cowbells, which bring suffering to cows due to their heavy weight and deafening sound.
“To expect something like this of an animal just for traditional reasons should be completely rejected,” Nicole Bruhl, president of the Bavarian branch of the German Animal Protection Federation, said on Monday.
Bruhl added that most grazing areas where cows are kept are fenced-in, so bells actually serve no purpose, while she proposed GPS as a better, more humane way of tracking the cows’ movement.
On the other hand, the Bavarian Agriculture Minister Helmut Brunner said that he does not consider that action is needed, as he does not believe that “the bells annoy the cows, neither because of their weight nor their sound.”
However, he argued that GPS tracking might be a possible solution, despite admitting that this technique is not yet ready, but is still in the trial phase.
