LIMA – At least 11 people died and 41 were injured on Tuesday when the truck in which they were riding plunged into a lake in a remote part of Peru’s southern Cuzco region, local media reported.
The truck, which belonged to the Livitaca municipal authorities, went off a bridge and fell some 10 meters (33 feet) into the lake, RPP Noticias reported.
The victims were residents of the communities of Jalq’o and Huayllabamba and they were being transported to take part in a parade for the country’s Independence Day festivities, which are being celebrated on Tuesday.
Among the dead is a 12-year-old girl, along with eight men and two women, while the injured were taken to the local medical clinic.
Serious road accidents are common occurrences in Peru, most of them resulting from driver error, the poor state of local roads and vehicles and/or the rough rural terrain.
