CARACAS -- The President of the government-appointed National Electoral Council (CNE), Tibisay Lucena, announced that Venezuela will hold elections for its National Assembly on December 6.
At a press conference broadcast on state broadcaster VTV, Lucena reported that the registration rolls would close on July 8.
She said that the CNE will accept nominations for congress from August 3 to August 7 and that campaigning will run from November 13 to December 3.
Lucena also said that Venezuela will ask UNASUR, the Union of South American Nations, to provide an electoral mission "to accompany us these months and the day of the election."
"They picked December 6 because that is the day that Chavez first won office in 1998," says Russ Dallen, head of Caracas Capital Markets, who had predicted last month that the elections would be held December 6.
