Trinidad and Tobago Marks 170 Years Since 1st East Indian Arrivals

SAN JUAN – Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar commemorated on Friday the 170th anniversary of the first arrival of East Indians to Trinidad and Tobago.

“For all of us, as people of Trinidad and Tobago, it is a day we recognize one of the pillars of the model nation we have become,” Persad-Bissessar said in a message published on the government’s official webpage.

The “emotional connection” between the twin-island nation and India remains strong, due in part to the education which has helped unify Trinidad and Tobago, the prime minister said.

Persad-Bissessar said her government is very active in fighting racial discrimination and she called on her country’s 1.3 million people – roughly 625,000 of them of East Indian descent – to “resist attempts to divide us.”
