Mexican Actress Maria Elena Velasco Dies

MEXICO CITY – Mexican actress Maria Elena Velasco, best known for her popular film character “La India Maria,” has died, the Mexican Film Institute said Friday. She was 74.

The institute said via Twitter that it “regrets the death of Maria Elena Velasco ‘La India Maria.’”

Mexican media reported that the actress had a high-risk surgical operation for stomach cancer and was hospitalized for almost two months.

Born in 1940 in the central city of Puebla, Velasco popularized the La India Maria character in dozens of movies during the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

Velasco’s last role was in the 2014 film “Moctezuma’s Daughter,” which marked her return after an absence of more than a decade.
