ROME – Juventus beat Monaco 1-0 on Tuesday in the first leg of a Champions League quarterfinal against Monaco, the Cinderella team of the current edition of Europe’s premier club competition.
Playing in front of supporters in Turin, heavily favored Juventus had to dig deep to overcome a tenacious Monaco squad that stunned Arsenal in the round of 16 to claim a berth in the quarterfinals.
The Italian team created several chances in the first half, but seemed unable to fire on target.
What turned out to be the winning goal came in the 57th minute, when Chilean midfielder converted on a penalty awarded after the referee cited Monaco’s Ricardo Carvalho for a foul against Alvaro Morata.
The second leg will be played next week at Monaco’s Stade Louis II in Fontvieille, France.
