Istanbul Arrests 29 Police Officers for Conspiring Against Government

ANKARA – Istanbul Prosecutors ordered on Monday the arrest of 29 police officers accused of “spying, eavesdropping and attempting to hinder the government work” in the newest struggle between the current Islamist government and its former ally, Fethullah Gulen, a cleric living in the United States in exile for 16 years.

The operation, based on the premise that there are plans by the Gulen terrorist organization to form a “parallel state,” is centered in Istanbul, but there are arrests in other regions, according to broadcaster CNN Turk.

Hundreds of police officers, prosecutors and judges have been arrested, dismissed or transferred within the anti-Gulen operation, initiated in early 2014.

The government believes that Gulen was behind the 2014 leaks that implicated the then prime minister and current president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a series of corruption cases.
