U.S. Missionary Kidnapped in Central Nigeria

LAGOS A female U.S. missionary has been kidnapped by an armed group in the central Nigerian state of Kogi, Nigerian police said on Tuesday.

They indicated that the incident took place the previous day when the woman, whose identity and affiliation have not been disclosed, was performing her duties as a missionary, and a group of masked men attacked her.

State police spokesman Sola Adebayo explained that several people tried to help the missionary, but the assailants fired shots in the air to disperse them.

The spokesman said the reasons for the abduction were still not clear, but kidnappings for ransom are not uncommon in Nigeria.

Most of the hostages are usually released unharmed after ransom is paid or they are rescued by the security forces.
