SHANGHAI – Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy arrived in Shanghai on Wednesday, at the start of an official visit to China where he is to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang.
Rajoy will begin his official agenda on Thursday with a meeting with Chinese businessmen, followed by talks with the mayor of Shanghai before departing for Beijing.
According to sources in the Spanish government, Rajoy’s visit is aimed at bolstering economic and trade relations between the two countries, which could give a boost to the European country’s underperforming economy.
Rajoy left Madrid following the resignation of his Justice minister, Alberto Ruiz Gallardon, after the latter’s proposal for a new abortion law was informally rejected by Rajoy’s ruling center-left Popular Party.
Rafael Catala was named as Ruiz Gallardon’s replacement.
