MIAMI – A Florida man fatally shot his adult daughter and six of his grandchildren before calling the police and killing himself once the officers arrived, authorities said.
The massacre took place in Bell, a town of 350 people west of Gainesville.
The shooter, Don Spirit, 51, had a criminal record, according to Gilchrist County Sheriff Robert D. Schultz. The children ranged in age from 2½ months to 11 years, media outlets said.
Schultz said that while officers who went to the scene were able to open a dialogue with Spirit, he did not say why he killed his family members.
Other people who were inside the house at the time of Thursday’s incident escaped alive, according to media accounts.
“There’s still a lot of unanswered questions. There’s going to be questions that we’re never going to get answered,” Sheriff Schultz said.
