LA PAZ – Bolivia has deported retired captain Jorge Horacio Paez Senestrari to his country, where he faces a 25-year jail sentence after being convicted for crimes against humanity committed under the military dictatorship (1976-1983). Paez Senestrari, 68, was handed over to Argentine authorities by Interior minister Jorge Perez on Sunday at the border town of Yacuiba, the ministry said in a statement on Monday. In Argentina, Paez was sentenced to 25 years in prison for “aggravated homicide, violation of domicile and torture,” the government of La Paz said in a statement. An Interpol arrest warrant had been issued against the former captain, who was arrested Friday in his home in the eastern Bolivian city of Santa Cruz, the statement said. Up to 30,000 people were killed or disappeared under the military dictatorship in Argentina, most of them opponents of the regime. |
