Congressman Shot in Central Mexico

MEXICO CITY – A congressman was shot early Thursday in Mexico state, which surrounds the Federal District and forms part of the Mexico City metropolitan area, and he is listed in serious condition, leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) spokesmen told Efe.

Ramon Montalvo and his driver were in Concepcion, a neighborhood in the city of Valle de Chalco, when gunmen traveling in another vehicle opened fire on them.

The federal congressman was shot twice in the chest and once in an arm.

Montalvo was transported to a hospital in the city of Ixtapaluca, where doctors managed to stabilize his condition so he could be airlifted to a Mexico City hospital.

PRD leaders criticized the attack on Montalvo, a former Valle de Chalco mayor, in posts on social-networking sites and called for an exhaustive investigation of the shooting.

“I condemn the violence! I wish Ramon Montalvo a speedy recovery and for there to be justice,” PRD chairman Jesus Zambrano said.

Silvano Aureoles, the PRD’s coordinator in the lower house of Congress, criticized the attack and called for an investigation to determine who was behind the shooting.

Mexico state, the country’s most populous state, has been dealing for the past few months with a wave of kidnappings, robberies, extortion rackets and murders unleashed by criminal organizations.

The criminal organizations operating in Mexico have kidnapped and murdered numerous politicians and businessmen in recent years.

A state legislator was kidnapped by gunmen at a casino in Chilpancingo, the capital of the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, on Tuesday night.

Olaguer Hernandez Flores was abducted at the Emotion casino in the Galerias de Chilpancingo mall, the Guerrero Attorney General’s Office said in a statement released on Wednesday.
