Argentine Cops Bust Drug Band, Seize 50,000 Ecstasy Tablets

BUENOS AIRES – Argentine security forces busted a band that sold designer drugs in Buenos Aires in an operation in which they seized 50,000 Ecstasy tablets and $500,000 in cash, Argentina’s security secretary said Monday.

Eight people were arrested on Sunday during several raids in which law enforcement authorities also seized two machines used to manufacture the pills, luxury vehicles and gold ingots, Sergio Berni told a press conference.

“The band devoted itself to the production of Ecstasy. They had 50,000 Ecstasy pills. Medications such as ketamine and others were seized, which are mixed with powders to make the pills,” Berni said.

Ketamine is a general anesthetic typically used in veterinary procedures but is sometimes used recreationally.

“We arrested the entire band. Those who produced the drug, those who financed it and those who marketed it,” he added.

Berni said that the band was busted “at the time of a transaction” involving $500,000 in U.S. dollars, Swiss francs and other foreign currencies and that the cash was also seized.

The Ecstasy tablets were distributed at discotheques in greater Buenos Aires, the security secretary said.
