Cops Among Gang of Hired Killers Busted in Guatemala

GUATEMALA CITY – Three police officers were part of a gang of suspected killers-for-hire broken up over the weekend, Guatemala’s PNC national police said Monday.

Members of the special DEIC investigative unit, supported by the internal affairs division, on Sunday in the country’s interior captured six suspected members of the Los Sierra gang, the PNC said in a statement.

Among those arrested are police officers Carlos Enrique Archila, 28; Erick Roberto Tigueros Carrillo, 36; and Geovany Castro de la Cruz, 30, the PNC added.

The captured civilians were identified as Rony Estuardo Melgar Velazquez, 32; Alexander Oswaldo Diaz Martinez, 23; and Rozo Rogelio Gil Quezada, 42.

The six men are accused of murder and criminal conspiracy.

The band operated in the eastern provinces of Santa Rosa and Jalapa, where the police officers were arrested, and in the southern municipality of Amatitlan, where the civilians were taken into custody, the PNC said.

Security forces confiscated three 9 mm pistols and a shotgun, along with 123 rounds of ammunition, from the civilians.
