BOGOTA – A delegate from the Medellin Municipal Council for Victims’ Participation was murdered in the northwestern Colombian province of Antioquia, her colleagues said Wednesday.
The victim, Diana Marcela Morales Arenas, was found with her throat cut on Tuesday in Batea Seca, a rural area within the municipality of Angostura, according to a communique issued by the Council.
The organization, which provided no further details about Morales’ work or the case, issued a public statement in which it expressed its “rejection and indignation” over the murder as well as its solidarity and mourning.
In like manner, the group asked the national government and local authorities to take all necessary preventive measures to protect the leaders and defenders of human rights, as well as victims’ representatives.
The organization called on Colombians to defend human rights on an ongoing basis and to rally around the victims of the country’s decades-long armed conflict.
In addition, it demanded that the Attorney General’s Office immediately launch an investigation into the case “to impede impunity” and guarantee justice.
