MADRID A member of the Basque terrorist group ETA wanted by courts in Spain and France was arrested in Venezuela, the Spanish Interior Ministry said Friday.
Asier Guridi Zaloņa, who has been a fugitive since 2001, was apprehended thanks to cooperation among Venezuelan, Spanish and French authorities, the ministry said in a statement.
Guridi Zaloņa began his ETA activities in 1987, taking part in attacks on property in the northern Spanish town of Oņate.
He was arrested in December 1992 and was behind bars until 1997, but his name came up again when in January 2003, two members of ETAs logistics unit were arrested in Estialescq, France, and several of his photos were seized that had been used in fake IDs.
Four years later, a court in Paris sentenced him in absentia to two years in prison.
In November 2009, the Paris Court of Appeals handed down a European arrest warrant for criminal association in the planning of a terrorist act, which was added to the complaints in the Spanish courts.
ETA has killed more than 850 people since 1968 in its campaign for an independent Basque state comprising parts of northern Spain and southern France. EFE
